Pediatric or General Dentist? Which Should You Choose?

We get asked quite a bit, “What’s the difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist?” Did you know that there are a few key factors that every parent should know? Just like you, we want the very best care for your child. This only means one thing, you should be taking them to our pediatric dentists here at Encino Pediatric Dental Group. We offer high quality pediatric dental care, care and customer service you won’t want to find elsewhere.

DO I REALLY NEED TO TAKE MY CHILD TO A PEDIATRIC DENTIST? CAN’T MY DENTIST TAKE CARE OF MY CHILD’S TEETH?

A pediatric dentist is a dentist who is specialized in pediatric dentistry and has studied unique oral health needs for infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special health care needs. Only after completing four years of dental school, a pediatric dentist will then move on to a specialized training program. This pediatric dental training adds two more years onto the degree to prepare pediatric dentists to meet all of the unique needs a child may have. Once a pediatric dentist has completed all of his/her training, he/she will be equipped with knowledge and experience to provide any child, from as young as an infant to as old as an adolescent, the dental care they need to stay healthy. We focus on prevention, early detection and treatment of dental disease, and keep current with the latest advances in dentistry for your child. We are also trained to monitor the development and growth of children. But most importantly, we are trained to see the world through the eyes of a child. As parents, we know that it is important to introduce our children to new experiences in a positive light. And that is why it is so important that you work with a doctor and staff that are trained specifically to work with a child’s worldview.

It’s also important to choose a pediatric dentist that has sought additional voluntary certifications by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. As a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, or a board certified pediatric dentist, we have completed additional hours of training and studies to prepare us to educate families and identify specialized treatment that many general dentists may not recognize.

We invite you to stop by Encino Pediatric Dental Group for a tour to see what makes a pediatric dental office that is child centered so special.
